Interpretar. Interpreting. 口譯

Interpreting

One of the many things we have put in a boot along with religions, moral codes and certain traditional customs, has been hermeneutics. For many centuries, great efforts were made to translate, explain and interpret the sacred texts of the different traditions, which explains why most of the exegetes belonged to the clerical sphere. It was during the last century that several philosophers and thinkers made valuable contributions that boosted the discipline and expanded it beyond theology.

Now, however, we ordinary people do not have much help in translating, explaining or interpreting what is happening to us as a society. We receive an enormous amount of information but it is not accompanied by a corresponding analysis, and the information issued by journalists, tv tertulians or supposed experts does not seem to be of much use to us.

Each era has had a narrative that has sustained it based on a cosmology and an anthropology. The human being was sensed as a creature between heaven and earth with a sense and a duty. The guardians of these narratives have for centuries been the religions. The crisis in the religious sphere has meant a loss of grip for many who have lost their narrative of family, local or social reference and have not been able to replace it with a consistent one.

It is true that there are many secular, atheistic or scientific narratives, nationalisms, populisms and partisanships, but they are not universal in stature, they may serve some but not all. And that we will have to assume that the narrative we say is official, or assumed by the majority, based on the free market, cree consumption and the search for well-being does not provide answers to basic existential questions.

On the other hand, we are currently experiencing a global change that is very difficult to explain from within the system. We have to take a step back in order to get some perspective.

I will try to explain this by giving the example of the arrival of European ships in remote American or Asian territories. When two different cultures came into contact, an explosive exchange reaction took place, similar to putting two different chemical media separated by a membrane. The ions and salts start a dance from one side to the other until the situation is in balance again. The more cultural difference the process is more violent.

The same thing has happened in our time since the process of globalisation began in the second half of the last century. The non-globalised world of our grandparents, who lived in the spanish dictatorship with its corresponding narratives, was blown up by the political, social and economic changes that followed. The elderly are exceptional witnesses and no one is asking them for help in trying to understand what values they lived by then and what we are lacking now.

Globalisation has made us better off economically, with better cars, a mobile phone in our pockets, technology and screens everywhere and an infinite catalogue of entertainment. But just as those conquerors with their armour and their ships filled the hands of the naïve villagers with trinkets, real gold continues to be taken away and jobs disappear from our surroundings by magic to appear in remote, invisible but increasingly powerful places that are becoming the new centre of the empire. The best workers, the most gifted, also disappear, attracted like bees to new meadows full of flowers and opportunities.

Market forces and globalisation are merciless. They tend to destroy the public institutions and the support networks of society where they lay their hands. The fewer public services and the more social inequality there is, the better for their interests, the more they will sell and the more they will enslave. Because that is the idea, there is no empire that cannot be sustained without slaves, even if the word is not politically correct.

The defence of European societies, among others, is the issuance of debt to fill in the holes and cracks that are appearing. But it is a flight forward; everyone knows that a point will come when it will no longer be possible to play in that direction. It is buying time in the face of a disaster of great proportions that nobody wants to imagine. The problem is that the challenges of climate change, the extractive model of relationship with the environment, the lack of ecological awareness and respect for other species, the abuse of fossil fuels and above all human selfishness and ignorance are leading us down a blind alley.

This is where we are when a major pandemic appears and takes everything with it, as there is no health system capable of controlling it, and everything seems to be blown up. We realize how vulnerable we are and how easy it is to lose our health or our lives. We realize how light our rights and freedoms are, how quickly they disappear and how much they are worth when we don't have them. We realise that as a society we are very limited, we cannot understand each other, agree or work together. We realise that it is easier to insult someone who thinks differently than to try to listen to him and then stand by him to put out the fire that threatens us both. We realise the fragility of our institutions, unable to respond sufficiently to any challenge that goes beyond the usual mess.

Powerlessness and anger characterise today's average citizen who sees everything burning around him without him being able to do much apparently, while rights and public services are being squeezed out from under his nose. However, there is something important that we can all do: stop for a moment and think. Realise what is important to each of us, realise how we relate to our community and how we could improve that relationship. Realise that the common good may be more important than the staff. To realise that if we do not bring value, work, reflection, help, awareness and compassion to those around us, we may be responsible for what is happening.

We are going to have to restart many things, and to do this it will be essential to understand what is happening. If, once we understand, we want to help, we must do so with our way of life, with our way of treating the environment and others, with a vision that puts the common good at the centre and is respectful of the environment.

Surely for this process we need new narratives that drink from the old ones, and maintain a hermeneutic that helps us to explain the chaos, which will invariably come to us.
