La casa sin amo. The house without a master.

https://twitter.com/doctorcasado/status/1497283549686345733?s=21

The house without a master

"Zara or Mercadona take care of their employees and the National Health System does not. This is a house without a master" @rogaltro

Healthcare is a huge house with people who come and go and others who attend. A complex labyrinth where thousands of professionals toil to sustain an institution of enormous proportions, one of the largest national companies designed with industrial plans.

Each time the queue to get in is more and more impressive. Huge crowds come to seek help for both inconsequential matters and serious illnesses, with the former hindering the latter in a clearly unsupportive manner. They have forgotten that in the world of health care, priority must be given to the most vulnerable, weak or needy, arguing for a theoretical equality of rights, which, although it exists, must be rethinked.

Another paradox is how this institution mistreats its professionals. Despite the enormous workload and how difficult it is to spend one's life listening to, supporting and attending to the miseries of others, the invisible managers are not shy to demean their workers in every possible way. Not leaving the office and staying prudently away from their subordinates must help, and the fact that there is no one in charge must also help. It is a house without a master, no one is really responsible for it. And the politician on duty with his four-year myopia is never to be trusted, whatever colour he is.

Now that we know what a pandemic is, perhaps we have learned that it pays to keep the sanitary house clean and tidy. And that it might be wise to treat employees as they do in Zara or Mercadona, at least with a little more dignity. If professionals  end up leaving, no matter how much you pay for private insurance, ask yourself who is going to look after you when you get really sick.

Epidemia de miedo. An epidemic of fear.

An epidemic of fear

Fear is a contagious emotion. It spreads through families, neighbourhoods and towns, and in our globalised era we see it at its most extreme. And after experiencing its various manifestations in the form of anxiety, oppression, discomfort, a lump in the throat, a tight stomach, cervical contracture and a long list of possibilities, its effects will follow. Social withdrawal, increased consumption of intoxicants, increased consumption in general, disaffection with political or social issues, a certain clouding of meaning and a desire to distract oneself and escape.

It is an ancient form of social control that is manipulated at will by those in power. We have had two years of pandemic and now we are starting with a war in Europe, against the backdrop of the climate and economic threat. Will there be any antidote (not to say vaccine, which is a rather questionable word)?

I would point out that anything that helps us to strengthen our hope, confidence, connection with others and with ourselves will be of great help. For this, a certain degree of screen fasting is essential. Without limiting negative news, it is impossible to maintain sufficient serenity. This also means a short amount of social networking and instant messaging services. To connect with others I would advise going back to the phone call, the sms text message or, better still, the postcard. Walks are another great way to resist adversity, if it is in a park or natural environment, all the better. And the slow conversation with someone close to us, words are still the supreme ingredient to try to get closer to what we call reality.

Everyone has their own resources in this respect, so I won't go any further. I would only encourage us to look at ourselves a little every day and recognise the emotions that may be present. If we detect an excess of fear, we will have to adjust our level of emotional hygiene to recognise it, accept it and, when the time comes, flush it away.

Take heart and take care of yourselves.

Arquitectura emocional. Emotional architecture.

 Emotional architecture.

Is it possible to map the self, to venture a map, to conceive a volume or an architecture? Sigmund Freud was undoubtedly a pioneer when it came to theorising a model that has been copied and manipulated to the extreme, but until today we have never had in our hands a proposal that gives us a set of affective constructions with architectural rigour and a novel narrative. Mauro Gil-Fournier offers it to us in his book "Las casas que me habitan" (The houses that inhabit me), in which he describes a series of proposals for interior architecture with their corresponding designs, plans and elevations in the manner of a biographical journey through the author's interior avenues.

If when it comes to choosing a house as a dwelling we have the task to see many in order to choose or to propose a new design from scratch with the help of a professional, if we crunch the numbers to see if we can afford it and pledge savings and great efforts to get it, would it not be reasonable to do the same with the interior spaces that we inhabit permanently?

This book opens the door to a new way of conceiving, designing and imagining the interior homes we go through in our personal biography. It gives a new dimension to the art of designing and constructing buildings on the one hand and to the art of understanding and healing psychology and the human soul on the other.

The great originality and creativity of this vision are of unquestionable value in an age based on a permanent cut-and-paste. The material that is put before us is totally new and tremendously practical. We are invited to look at ourselves and those around us in a new way and to become riggers of our own hollows.

Developing new ways of looking at and constructing the world is an ancient faculty that remains indispensable to us. It is not just a matter of standing out by implementing bigger, more modern or more expensive projects. In a situation of global degrowth that will force us to limit the material abuses with which we threaten the planet, it is great news to be reminded that sustainable development must be based on generating non-material ideas and proposals. This book is a wonderful example.

El médico del rey. The King's Physician.

The King's Physician

Imagine for a moment that His Majesty the King had as his personal doctor a specialist in family medicine in the public health system. I know it is difficult, but it will only be for a moment.

Imagine if the same thing happened with the President of the Government or the President of the Autonomous Community. Imagine the power that such an example would have. Consider that the best service for health issues is the one offered by the national health system.

In the UK or other countries they do, but here our forefathers still think that there are two Spains regardless of the ideology they profess or the position they hold. It is almost impossible for the judge's children to go to a public school or the notary's daughter to go to the primary health centre. They will undoubtedly choose a private service, leaving those who cannot afford it to use those that are paid for with taxes.

It is because of this and the lack of investment that essential public services such as primary health centres are devalued every year and survive as best they can. If they were everyone's health care, no doubt they would be better looked after.
