Biography of light, Pablo d'Ors succeeds again.

Biography of light, Pablo d'Ors succeeds again.

Pablo d'Ors is a priest and a writer. Of the seven books of his that I have read, this is the one that in my opinion takes both charismas to the extreme by giving us a masterpiece that dares to do something that very few have managed to do, to bring us closer to the Gospels in a way that touches our hearts and does not make us run away.

Before beginning, it is worth reading the prologue and epilogue. In the first we are told that what is written follows a triple perspective: existential, meditative and artistic. In the second, they confess that the text is the fruit of a period of desert and illness from which he manages to emerge gracefully thanks to the gift he has discovered in his many years of searching and prayer. A gift that flutters over the waters of each chapter.

One has to be daring to propose a catechesis in today's world, bloated with itself, where there seems to be no room for the old traditions.  And originality starts from something obvious: we are only transformed by what we manage to feel deeply. The author knows this from his own experience and offers himself to us as an earthenware bowl to pour us an excellent wine that is not his own. He has tasted it, as have the mystics the world has known, and knows well what it is capable of.

As a doctor, I am well aware that it is not easy to cross the deserts of difficulty that we inevitably have to face. At such times, one's faith is a powerful ally, but experience and one's own experience are even more so. That is why it is worth getting to know and travelling, in this case once again to Palestine, hand in hand with protagonists whom history has apparently distanced from us, but who, as we read in the text, we all carry more inside us than we would like to recognise.

In a time of shadows and fear like ours, it is good that someone rescues the light and turns it into a biography, a narration of life, opening up another opportunity for us to understand.

Pablo d'Ors

Un cómic sobre cáncer. Mom's cancer.

Mom's cancer.

The approach to serious illness is a pending subject in a society like ours that considers disability and death taboo. That's why I value creative projects like Brian Fiess' in relation to cancer. In his book he tells us about his experience as the son of a mother with cancer and invites us to enter into the dynamic of a family that sees its life transformed by a complex situation to which each protagonist reacts in a different way. By using the language of comics he makes the reality shown suitable for all audiences and even the youngest can approach and open lines of dialogue in their own families.

In spite of touching a hard subject I have to admit that I have enjoyed reading it identifying myself with the different characters and understanding that what we call health is a gift very little valued.

Atravesar el umbral. Crossing the threshold.

Crossing the threshold.

Vital disasters are doors that give us passage to new realities. We are not the same when we decide to cross the threshold. Something old is left behind and something new is offered in front of us. Whether the crisis is mediated by a serious illness, a terrible loss, or an unbearable pain, finally the situation forces us to make a simple decision: to accept or not the circumstance that is presented to us.

When an adverse circumstance affects all of humanity the same thing happens. Perhaps the difference is that it also allows us to realize that we are not isolated entities, families, regions or nations. The storm affects equally all those who sail on the same ship beyond surnames, philias or flags.

The famous Indian writer Arundati Roy reflected a few days ago in the Financial Times on the role of the Coronavirus in the current world situation:

"Whatever it is, the coronavirus has brought the powerful to their knees and the world to a halt, in a way that nothing else could have done. Our minds keep racing back and forth, wishing for a return to 'normalcy', trying to stitch a future on top of our past and refusing to accept the gap. But the gap exists. And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the end-of-the-world machine we have built for ourselves. Nothing could be worse than a return to normalcy.
Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world in a new way. This one is the same. It's a portal, a passage between one world and the next.
We can choose to cross that threshold, dragging behind us the corpses of our hatred and our prejudice, our greed, our data banks and our dead ideas, our dead rivers and our smoky skies. Or we can cross at a brisk pace, almost without luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”

My friend Ángel González shared this idea with me and offered me the possibility of developing it by taking advantage of the publication of my book Arconte Enfurecido (Angry Archon) a few months before the events. It is not a coincidence that it deals with issues that we are seeing now and will see in the coming months. Eduardo Tornos will help us to spread the meeting through the Internet.

Reality forces us to be creative. Marrying philosophy, poetry, literature and dialogue is more necessary than ever. That is why we are opening a space to which we invite you.

We will talk about all this on Monday June 22nd from 21 to 21:45 and we will do it from the cyberspace, being the conversation open and being able to be followed from my Twitter account.

Entering an Intensive Care Unit in the age of Coronavirus.

Entering an Intensive Care Unit in the age of Coronavirus.

Healing is a maze with many abodes. One of the most feared are the ICUs because they involve very serious patients, not always positive prognoses and total defenselessness for those who enter them.

Would you agree to spend a few hours inside them with a special intensivist? If you accept the offer I propose Gabi Heras as an escort and "In the front line" as the door that will take you to know a reality where life and death dance on a thin red line while a lot of health professionals are busy with a thousand tasks.

The book is a small miracle written in record time and tells the story of the Coronavirus crisis almost live. With a close and cordial style, it takes us by the hand through very difficult situations that may help us understand the weight that the health professionals carry in their day to day.

Gabi Heras opens his ICU and his life, giving us his way of seeing things and her effort to humanize both the assistance and his daily life. We give what we have, this book is a proof by offering us a real testimony told from the heart. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Cartografías humanas, Human cartographies.

Human cartographies

In the contemporary narrative scene, Ana Merino stands out with her recent Nadal Award for El mapa de los afectos, a book written by an author who knows what she is saying and can say it properly. She shares with us the vision of a professor of creative writing in Iowa, on the one hand offering her craft as a writer, on the other hand the fact of being a citizen of the American Midwest that will be the scene of the work. The composition of the text in practically independent chapters makes it very easy to read which is helped by the mature use of language, the economy of superfluous means and the enormous poetic base of the author. The plot and characters allow for a range of actions and scenes where life and death, horror and tenderness fit. It is not a book about goodness, but rather about humanity that always contains one side of light and the other of shadow. Nor can it be said that the good guys win, moving the text away from the hackneyed discourse of so much mass film culture and stands closer to life itself which, in my opinion, draws with delicacy and precision. I believe that readers will recognize the many characters who remind them of family members, friends or acquaintances, as well as find similar experiences of their own in their gestures or circumstances. Because this book is ultimately like a screenshot of a GPS turned into a great map of humanity, something that can only be done with the magic of great literature.

Proyecto Arconte enfurecido. Angry Archon proyect.

Angry Archon proyect

They have sold us progress as the imperial religion. We've been told that technology would solve all our problems. That was a lie. The first leads us to the cliff of environmental disaster, the second to scenarios of control and absolute power.

It's not easy for anyone to be the bearer of bad news. But it is what it is. We have reached a point of no return, and if we do not make amends for what we find, we will not like it at all.

On the other hand no one can imagine what is about to emerge. We have received visions and dreams but what is to come is much greater than we can conceive. That's why we need more poets, madmen and enlightened people to translate these predictions into understandable language.

Modern global distractions seem to be trying to put social attention on issues far removed from what it really deserves. The cause of the world being on fire is the decision of countless subjects to squander such attention. Finding narratives that focus on what is truly important is a challenge for this society. Poetry can help us in that endeavour by allowing us degrees of freedom that prose does not offer.

Dante was courageous in daring to map the shadow in verse. Going down to hell is easy, what is complicated is getting out of it and telling about it. To repeat that feat in our time is just as risky, one could stay stuck in the shadow or see his dark message rejected. We follow its trail and what we find is both old and new, expected and surprising. But we must remember that the most valuable faculty of human beings is not their intelligence but their ability to imagine what they have not seen. From there it is possible to visualize a new eschatology.

The Angry Archon project was born from an inspiration that produced visions that were turned into verse for several weeks. What emerged produced a feeling of strangeness in the author so it was placed in a drawer where it remained for a year. After that time, in a new dream, the book of poems appeared along with a friend, which encouraged the author to contact him and share his doubts. Fortunately, this person contributed what was needed at that moment: trust. His help has been decisive in editing and illustrating the work.

Paula Alvear took part in the illustration process and patiently accepted the author's words and guidelines to create images that give the work the dreamlike and expectant atmosphere that characterizes it.

Poor my son
Whose monstrous thirst
It's overkill.

King Minos' Haiku

The intention of the book is to sow seeds of reflection and awareness that will help the reader to rescue the questions that allow him to look at his personal end. Every human being contains hell, heaven and purgatory, and it is worth learning to live with them.

The work has been printed in a limited edition in square format on heavyweight quality paper. Signed copies can be obtained at the presentations of the work or by requesting them by e-mail (info@doctorcasado.es).

An electronic version suitable for mobiles, tablets and e-books has been prepared, as well as a paper version in standard size, both of which are available on the Amazon website (from 30 January).

An English and a French version will be available throughout the year.

For information on the project or the presentations you can follow the author's social networks or request it in writing by e-mail.

The help of all the readers of this blog will be essential to enjoy and spread the project.
