Alta Velocidad. High Speed.

George Tooker, The Subway (1950)

High Speed

As a society we have bet heavily on speed. In an attempt to adapt to modern times, we want to do everything faster, more profitably, more efficiently. We accelerate thought and processes, our bodies enclosed in vehicles, our modern systems and organisations. In this way we use educational systems that educate less and less, healthcare systems that function worse and worse, and ultra-modern trains that cause more and more problems. After the second tragedy of the year involving one of them, someone yesterday remarked ironically that here in Spain we have more problems than in Ukraine, which is suffering bombardments. The irony is that they are right: speed is more dangerous than bombs. And we fail to realise that our accelerated walk puts us at risk. We stop perceiving where we are and where we are going. Our grandparents used more precarious trains and arrived later, but they knew both things. Those were slower and safer times in which values and priorities were clearer, because they had more solid reference points and, in some way, life was simpler. Adding the cliché that those times were better is easy; it is clear that we have to accept what we have. But perhaps it is worth becoming aware that what is sold to us as progress may be highly dangerous.Mathematically, trains remain the safest means of transport. But nothing is invulnerable to catastrophe and death. Both things unsettle us because, as a society, we do not know what to do with either of them. Encouraging a necessary personal reflection on the speed at which each person lives their life and on each individual’s relationship with their own mortality seems sensible in turbulent times in which, precisely, haste makes it difficult for us to think and to share those thoughts.Human beings remain primates designed by evolution to walk through natural environments. Today we feel distant from that path, disoriented, surrounded as we are by technology and devices that make us move through space and time almost as if we were people from another planet. Yet we still retain a bipedal design intended specifically for moving at low speeds. Hurtling along at 200 km/h seems to move away from that primitive intention, and doing so endows us with a great deal of potential energy capable of putting us at risk.Today is a sad day. Vulnerability, suffering and death make themselves present, and that stirs powerful feelings. I join in the grief of those who have mourned a loss, adding my small hope that we may discover in this regrettable event an opportunity to look inside ourselves for a moment and ask ourselves once again where we are and where we want to go.
