Dieciséis vueltas al mundo. Sixteen times around the world.

Sixteen times around the world

While her mother was reading a space book to our daughter in the kitchen, I heard from the living room that they were talking about the size of the Earth, they asked me if I knew the diameter, and I told them to ask Siri. The assistant gives them the information and after a brief mental calculation I hear "well, I've been around the world sixteen times with the last two cars". My wife is a family doctor, she drives 112 km a day, 560 km a week, 2240 km a month, 24640 km a year to get to work. Many years of clinics in remote villages, distant reinforcements, long-distance internships and a permanent post more than 56 km from home. I think I am not far behind, I could put as many rounds on the table and we would already be talking about 32 without counting those that we accumulate for leisure trips.

If we were to calculate the number of patients attended to, we would also come up with a crazy figure, given that a general practitioner in Spain has greater care pressures and workloads than in the countries around us.

But, beyond the numbers, I ask myself, will this be of any use? And seeing how institutions seem to be melting down and social unrest increasing, I can't help but shiver.

We are approaching a time when we will have to stop spinning like crazy and start walking again. A time when it may not be easy to find family doctors. Let's not look ahead to the future, today I'm content to look at the moon and stop for a moment.
