¿A qué nos estamos enfrentando? What are we dealing with?

What are we dealing with?

Either the economy is at the service of social policy or it's the other way around. That is why classical ideologies are increasingly obsolete, as they are unable to reverse the force of the market that governs the world's destiny.

The value of economic profit supersedes all other values, and the common good must yield vassalage, notwithstanding. The current situation of confinement has obvious disadvantages but it allows us to take up again an activity that we do not usually exercise: reflection. That is why I dare to start the day by sharing the ones I have in my hands at this moment.

Who is the worst enemy today? We could ask. And the answer will come soon, the dangerous virus that threatens our fragile societies. However, it's all a matter of perspective. Despite everything, many more people will die this year from road accidents than from covid19 , and let's not say anything about hunger, poverty or diarrhoea... The worst enemy is still (by far) human stupidity. Not realising that our way of life, our values, the way we have organised society, is not compatible with life.

The degradation of ecosystems and the rise in global temperature will lead to a genocide of biblical proportions. Most cannot (or will not) imagine this. But it is right there, around the corner. That's why these weeks of confinement may be our last chance to realize it, before the doors open and noise and show business floods into our lives again.

Either we continue to seek our personal gain or we seek the common one. Either we put ourselves first or we put all of humanity first. It's not as easy as you might imagine. But the consequences are what they are. That's why it's necessary to turn to numbers and science. To the facts, however hard they may be. This year, several million people around the world will die from the Coronavirus. In the following decades, mortality will be much worse in relation to famine, various diseases, natural disasters and other plagues if our way of life does not change. There have always been pandemics, but don't doubt that they will come more frequently associated with the other disasters that are on the horizon.

We do not fix this with donations, tax increases or speeches. It's going to take something more proportionate. Something that we will not like but that if it does not happen will lead us to the worst possible scenario.

That is why it may be useful to rescue the value of hospitality, of opening up to foreigners, of receiving what is different in our own home. Perhaps the answers to our unsolvable questions can be found in what the one who is not like us can teach us, and who brings in his hands another way of life. The tendency to close societies, build walls and raise dikes makes us lose perspective and locks us in fear just when we most need to raise our own position to look further ahead.

Confinement to prevent the spread of covid19 also helps us to escape for a few days from the siren calls of a market society based on trade and the search for economic profit. Would it be possible to change the system for one that seeks social benefit? Can we imagine a life that we could turn around?

Before answering, it is necessary to see it. To see us living a more humane, simpler, more authentic and therefore less dehumanized, complicated, developed, economic life. To see ourselves perhaps in the skin of our grandparents with fewer superfluous objects in their homes but more capacity to value what is truly worthwhile.

Surely there will be people who will be able to see it and share it and pass it on. At the moment I do the same with these slight brushstrokes that only intend to facilitate a task that no one can delegate to others becouse our own feet obey their owner will to choose a path.
