La fuente de la vida. The source of life

The source of life.

Many traditions have narratives about the source of life including parallel stories of eternal youth, the holy grail and other searches. In them we find the human being's yearning to live and transcend the limitation of death. This imperious desire has generated cosmologies, mythologies and religions, built pyramids, ziggurats and temples. In short: it has driven human beings to seek meaning.

In each epoch, this search has been carried out in different ways. Scouts were sent to the ends of the world, eyes were focused on the starry night, efforts were made to study and meditate or spaces and buildings were built. Today, science and technology seem to be searching for meaning and many find life or youth in cosmetic surgery or vain pleasures, as has always been the case. We also find sellers of meaning in sects or new age products that offer old pearls of wisdom conveniently made up. Nothing new under the sun.

However, the common people seem to have forgotten the access to the sources of life that although they continue to flow, they do so with a slight rumour that the din of everyday life completely erases. Modern societies seem to turn their backs on the religions and mystics who knew these narrow paths. Faith dogmas, hierarchies, structures of other times and rigid morals have driven many away. The misfortune is that treasures have also been left behind and it took a great deal of effort to find them, including everything related to the source of life.

Access to the holy has been protected by religions by relegating it to the inaccessible, covering it with veils that only the corresponding guardians controlled. Those who discovered and announced the way to reach the source were often executed, burned or crucified. And so we have been for centuries. What characterizes our time today is the coexistence of a free market that seeks to commodify everything that can be turned into a good or service with the involution of traditional religions stripped of the credibility and strength they had in the past. On the one hand we have all kinds of spiritual products for sale and on the other hand the writings and testimonies of these ancient traditions. It is therefore possible to learn from the efforts made by others to open up routes that connect us to life and give us meaning.

The challenge remains the same as thousands of years ago. To realize that the sources of life cannot be too far away from the beings who enjoy that state and that that life we experience unites us with those who also enjoy it, enjoyed it or will enjoy it.

When we manage to relate to that part of ourselves that we call the source of life, it is easier to find meaning and balance in the circumstances that touch us. When we fail to do so, we are exposed to overload and hopelessness and consequently to end up buying substitutes that do not satisfy our thirst for meaning and transcendence.

It is in vital crises, diseases and losses that the importance of access to a source of life becomes most evident. Without this possibility, the remedies, care and pills will not produce sufficient relief no matter how large the diagnostic and treatment coils are.

Health professionals often don't have time to stop and ask questions about issues so seemingly far removed from the physical and bodily problems that keep them busy. The existential sphere of the person is overlooked as if it did not exist or was a business far removed from its competence. Maybe it's a mistake. Just as it is not possible to separate the physical from the psychological, neither will it be possible to separate the social and existential. But just as there are psychologists and social workers to deal with the corresponding problems, who will deal with spiritual and existential issues when they have a strong impact on the person's reality and health?

The thirst for meaning and hope impels us as a society and as individuals to seek the water that quenches it. However, it is not precisely the most economically developed countries that are best able to meet this need. Rather, they distract it by providing infinite content, goods and services that temporarily quench that thirst.

The one who dares to walk in his garden ends up knowing it and sooner or later he will find the fountain. Whoever drinks from it once will not be able to stop because its water really quenches the thirst for life. The day will come when this act will seem to us to be daily and elementary. The survival of the species may depend on generalizing this source of meaning.
